Google has released Android Canary build 2608 for Pixel devices, giving us an early look at some of the features the company is experimenting with for future Android releases. The latest build introduces a redesigned Quick Settings editor with more layout customisation, alongside new multitasking improvements for foldables and tablets.
Android Users Can Reposition Elements in Quick Settings
The main highlight of Android Canary build 2608 is the addition of a dedicated layout editor for Quick Settings. Similar to One UI 8, Pixel phones can now natively change the arrangement of the panel by simply dragging and dropping the elements. They can choose between six distinct layout configurations.
This includes repositioning elements in the expanded Quick Settings view, including shifting the brightness bar toward the bottom or relocating the media player to the top of the grid.
Placing the media widget at the very top causes it to display directly above quick toggles during the initial notification shade pull-down. However, for reasons unknown, the same cannot be done with the brightness slider in the Quick Quick Settings (QQS) menu.
Besides, the Android Canary build 2608 also improves the multitasking experience on foldables. The update adds a floating app handle to make window management easier.
For starters, users can use the drag gesture to switch an active app between full-screen and split-screen modes. The bubble expansion action allows dragging the handle on a floating app bubble to expand it to full view. Finally, there's a new "move to fullscreen" option in the app context menu to expand minimised applications.
The latter pretty much builds one of the best Android 17 features called Bubble Anything, which allows users to multitask effortlessly. That said, these features are highly experimental and are not intended for primary use.
While we don't have enough information on whether these features will make it to the stable builds, it's good to see that Google is not done experimenting with the Quick Settings menu. Now, if we could only get the option to adjust brightness in QQS, that would be golden.
