Moving passwords and passkeys between password managers has often been a cumbersome process. Google is now making it simpler on Android with a new feature that lets users securely transfer their credentials between supported managers in just a few taps.
As per the latest Google blog post, the new Android password transfer protocol runs in three steps, with Android now handling the sensitive data. Users can now open the Password Manager app they are moving their passwords to and select the option to import or copy from another provider.
The Android subsystem will identify the transfer and guide users to complete it. Google will then automatically detect the password manager installed on an Android smartphone and can suggest which apps and systems allow import.
Once users have selected their desired app to import data from, simply tapping Continue will take the user to their existing manager to select, review and authorise exactly what gets transferred. The data can then move between the apps in a few seconds.
The entire process helps the Android subsystem handle the end-to-end password and passkey transfer process, rather than storing the data as unencrypted plaintext on the device itself.
Supported Password Managers and Android Devices
At launch, the transfer experience works with Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden and Dashlane, with Google saying more partners will follow. The feature works on phones running Android 17 and goes as far back as Android 8.
