Google is testing a new Gemini Intelligence feature that can make calls for users. Bearing a striking resemblance to the Google Duplex feature that was announced back in 2018, the new "Call for Me" feature is rolling out on the Pixel 11 series.
Google has announced that Call for Me is now available for Pixel 11 users in the US. The feature lets users do the following:
- Get business hours, product availability, service quotes, and other information.
- Book, confirm, and manage appointments and reservations.
- Navigate phone menus and wait on hold.
An example on the Google page shows a user asking Gemini to "Call The Pizza Place and have them add one more pizza to my order", followed by "Oh, and remind them to add utensils!", and Gemini will do it for the user.
Beyond that, users need to be of age 18 or older, have a Google AI subscription, and must be enrolled on the Phone by Google app's public beta.
Once enrolled, users will need to have the latest version of the Gemini mobile app installed and the device language set to English. It's worth noting that Call for Me is rolling out gradually and might not be available to all users instantaneously.
Lastly, Google mentions that Gemini will start every call by disclosing it's an AI assistant calling on the user's behalf and will state its name. The feature can be used by invoking Gemini via the "Hey Google" voice command or by opening the Gemini app and including "@Call for me" in the prompt.
While details about wider availability are currently unknown, the beginning of he initial testing phase suggests Google is preparing the feature for a wider release. More information should be revealed soon, so stay tuned.
