Android users may soon have much more control when installing new apps. Recent code appearances in the Google Play Store reveal a fully functional pause and resume feature for active app downloads.
The feature was first spotted by Android Authority, which reports that the feature is fully functional behind the flag and ready for rollout. Currently, an active installation on the Play Store only offers a rigid "Cancel" option. If a download is halted, the user loses their progress entirely.
However, the upcoming feature could allow users to dynamically pause the installation, saving the download progress and allowing them to resume later. Google is integrating these pending items right into the Play Store's brand-new download manager.
This eliminates the need to manually search for the app again once users are ready to finish the installation. Besides regular apps, this feature could be massively helpful for those trying to download a large game on a metered connection. Users can resume seamlessly when connected to Wi-Fi.
It can also be helpful to temporarily pause background updates and dedicate the bandwidth to a more urgent app download or background download task. Given that Android Authority's demonstration shows it is fully functional, an official rollout could be right around the corner, so stay tuned.
