Google's Live Translate tool lets you hold conversations with someone speaking another language, with your phone translating in real time. Until now, the feature has required an active internet connection to work, but Google is now changing that for eligible Pixel phones.
As per the Google Support help page, the Google Translate Live Mode is getting offline translation support. Users will be able to convert and translate 10 different languages: Hindi, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian and Swedish.
However, the biggest limitation of the offline mode, at the time of writing, is that instead of supporting cross-language translation, the feature can only translate from 10 supported languages into English. This means that translation from Hindi to English is possible, but translation from Hindi to Portuguese is not possible.
The support page says that for conversations between two non-English languages, users will still need an active data connection. Moreover, the rollout is also staggered. The offline mode in Live Translate is limited to the Google Pixel 9 series, Pixel 10 lineup and the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
That said, offline Live Translate is rolling out gradually through the Google Translate app. If you do not see it yet, make sure the app is updated and check again in a few days. Once live, the relevant offline language packs will be ready to download.
