Speaking at the 10th India Mobile Congress 2026, Reliance Jio Chairman Akash Ambani has confirmed that Jio is building a satellite communication stack. This move is expected to bring next-gen connectivity and is one of Jio's first steps toward India's first self-developed satellite connectivity.

Securing the 6G Future

Additionally, while 5G networks are still maturing in India, Jio is already laying the groundwork for 6G. Ambani emphasised the brand's commitment to establishing India as a global 6G leader in the landscape.

To directly support the national target of originating 10% of all worldwide 6G patents, Jio has started filing its own pre-6G patents. This investment in research and international standardisation will help Jio reach its goals while also positioning it as the primary driver of future telecommunications.

Alongside expanding its infrastructure, Jio also plans to integrate artificial intelligence into its standard consumer-facing offerings. Ambani noted that AI will heavily innovate traditional voice and data protocols to drive smarter connectivity and bring quality-of-life benefits to users.

That said, the Indian market has seen rapid expansion of both 5G NSA and SA networks. 5G rollout targets have been achieved at an excellent pace, exceeding their pan-India rollout targets by early 2024.

As a result, 5G now covers approximately 86% of the population, with 500 million active users, according to Union Minister for Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia. The potential rollout of 6G should help deliver faster data speeds of up to 1 Tbps over a higher terahertz spectrum, and the AI integration should aid users in various ways.

6G's rollout is still quite far and is expected to take place in early-to-mid 2030s. We should hear more about the developments in this space as we transition into 2027. Until then, stay tuned.
