We previously learned that OpenAI's first hardware product could be an AI-first, human-like smart speaker companion device. A new leak now reveals the expected launch timeline and pricing of OpenAI's AI-first smart speaker, its first hardware product with former Apple Designer, Jony Ive.
According to Mark Gurman, the Jony Ive-designed portable speaker will reportedly be shaped like a doughnut and is roughly the size of a hockey puck. The estimated price of the speaker could be between $300 (approximately Rs 29,000) and $400 ( approximately Rs 38,000)
Besides, just like the previous OpenAI smart speaker leaks suggest, the device will incorporate physical parts that actively move to indicate when it is processing or responding to commands.
The speaker could be built from premium, high-quality metals and could be battery-operated with built-in lights, microphones, a camera system and environmental sensors.
Powering the brains of the speaker could be an advanced AI model like ChatGPT's voice mode, which is made to learn more about its users over time for more human-like personalised interactions.
The device's development has also been overshadowed by Apple's lawsuit accusing OpenAI of stealing confidential hardware-related trade secrets. However, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says the speaker "looks, feels and acts nothing like an Apple product."
Moreover, OpenAI denied the trade secret allegations, characterising the lawsuit as "careless, aggressive and oddly personal". After a recent internal investigation, the AI supremo said it does not rely on any of Apple's proprietary designs. OpenAI's legal team also argued that Apple's claims are based on speculative misrepresentations.
That said, with the supposed launch timeline of the speaker on the radar, new information about the OpenAI smart speaker should come out soon.
Previous reports have pointed out that OpenAI is working on a total of five devices, including an AI pin, smart glasses, and potentially a smartphone. So, expect more updates on those fronts in the coming months as well.
