Qualcomm is only a month away from unveiling its next iteration of the Snapdragon 8 Elite flagship-grade processor. Ahead of that, a new report has hinted at the name of the upcoming SoC which is interesting to say the least.
Tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) claims that the next iteration of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset will be named the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. If true, this definitely comes as a surprise since the obvious choice should have been "Snapdragon 8 Elite 2".

While nothing has been officially confirmed by the brand, given how confusing Qualcomm's naming scheme has become in the last few years, we won't be surprised if this materialises in actuality.
However, it could also be a strategic repositioning move from the brand. Not too long ago, a leak suggested that Qualcomm is looking to launch a new Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 named chipset with the 2nd-gen 8 Elite's architecture. So, it could be Qualcomm's way of bringing both these SoCs (SM8850 and SM8845) under the "8 Gen 5" product portfolio.

That said, no matter the reason for this change, it is certain to bring confusion to the audience and create several mix-ups. But no matter what, the second-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite is still going to be the next flagship mobile processor from Qualcomm.
It is said to be a TSMC-made 3 nm processor with an octa-core setup featuring 2x prime Oryon cores and 6x performance Oryon cores. There could be the Adreno 840 GPU coupled with LPDDR5X / LPDDR6 memory.
With that being said, we will not need to wait for long to know for sure. The Qualcomm 2025 Snapdragon Summit is expected to kick off from September 23 onwards. So, we will know for sure if we are getting 8 Elite 2 or 8 Elite Gen 5.
