Samsung has officially announced the 200 MP ISOCELL HPC, its latest flagship smartphone camera sensor. The new camera sensor introduces industry-first DeepPix technology, a redesigned pixel architecture that improves light capture, HDR performance and noise reduction.

One of the biggest breakthroughs with the Samsung 200 MP ISOCELL HPC sensor is the DeepPix pixel technology. This brings a brand new pixel structure that improves how much light each pixel can hold before it overflows.

Samsung is using its Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) technology to expand both the photodiode capacity and the shared floating diffusion area within each pixel. This results in a 60% improvement in Full Well Capacity (FWC) over previous-generation 200 MP ISOCELL sensors.

The new sensor is a direct successor to the Samsung ISOCELL HPB "Thanos" sensor used by the Vivo X300 and Vivo X300 Pro. DeepPix is designed to capture more light per pixel, resulting in better highlights, deeper shadows, cleaner signal processing, and lower image noise levels.

Compared to the 200 MP ISOCELL HP5 sensor, the 200 MP ISOCELL HPC brings a larger 1/1.3-inch sensor size for more architecture-level processing at the pixel level.

Moving on, the ISOCELL HPC supports single-frame 16-bit HDR. This allows the 200 MP sensor to capture full dynamic range information in a single exposure rather than combining multiple exposures into one.

Samsung says this delivers up to 4x richer colour expression than conventional HDR imaging. The practical benefit of 16-bit HDR is handling challenging conditions like bright daylight, hard backlighting and high-contrast indoor environments, for a natural look without loss of detail or crushed shadows.

A big improvement with the Samsung 200 MP ISOCELL HPC sensor is the zoom-level HDR coverage. The sensor can support full single-frame HDR coverage across multiple in-sensor zoom levels. This ranges from 1x to all the way up to 4x.

Aside from that, the ISOCELL HPC also brings video improvements. The sensor can record 8K@30 FPS, 4K@180 FPS and 1080p@360 FPS. Samsung has also added two supporting optical technologies to the sensor: High Precision Microlens (High-P) and High Transmittance ARL (High-T).

As for the rest, the 200 MP ISOCELL HPC sensor packs 16,384 x 12,288 pixels, supports Tetra²pixel colour filter, QDR autofocus, Smart-ISO Pro HDR and multi-RAW formats like RAW10, RAW12, RAW14 and RAW16.

That said, Samsung has not yet revealed which specific phone or phones will use the new 200 MP ISOCELL HPC sensor. The Oppo Find X10 Pro Max and the Vivo X500 series are currently tipped to be among the first smartphones to feature the new sensor.

The Samsung ISOCELL HPC will also go head-to-head with Sony's 200 MP LYT-901, with both sensors expected to power several flagship Android phones launching later this year.
