WhatsApp has just made one more chore disappear into the same app you use to text your family and friends. The Meta-owned messaging platform has rolled out Bill Payments in India, letting users settle everyday household bills like electricity, gas, water, FASTag recharges, insurance premiums, credit card dues and loan EMIs, directly from within the chat interface.
The WhatsApp Bill Payments feature runs on the Bharat Connect network, formerly known as BBPS (Bharat Bill Payment System), which gives WhatsApp access to more than 22,700 billers spread across 30 categories. Now, that's a meaningful chunk of the country's utility and service providers, so most users should find their own billers already listed rather than having to hunt around.
Using the new WhatsApp feature is also fairly straightforward. There's now a rupee icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen that opens up the payments section. Here you can view upcoming dues, check past payments and pay using UPI, debit card, or credit card.
The flow itself is simple too, as all you need to do is pick a category and biller, add your account details, confirm the amount that's been fetched, choose a payment mode and pay.
A few conveniences are baked in beyond the basic pay-a-bill function. For starters, once you've paid a biller through WhatsApp, it shows up on your Payments Home screen for quicker access next time, so you're not re-entering account details every billing cycle.
The app also lets you track multiple accounts under one provider, which is handy if you're managing bills for a home, an office and a family member's account all from the same number. And rather than making you dig through every category available, WhatsApp surfaces the bill types people pay most often, with a "See All" option if you need something less common.

That new WhatsApp Bill Payments feature tracks with what WhatsApp has been building for its users in India over the past couple of years. The app already supports mobile recharges, metro ticket bookings in several cities and access to government services through chatbots.
Bill Payments is part of that same strategy for WhatsApp to become more than just a messaging app, especially for its largest user base in India.
WhatsApp says Bill Payments will be rolling out gradually to users across India in phases. It'll reach everyone on both Android and iOS over the coming weeks, so if you don't see the rupee icon yet, it should show up soon enough.
