The Redmi Note 17 Pro and the Note 17 Pro Max are premium midrange phones that boast several similarities, like the AMOLED display, the identical design and the HyperOS 3 software. So how are the two phones different from each other? What notable changes do they bring from the previous Note phones? And which one is best for you? Let's find out in this detailed comparison.

The only visible difference between them is that the camera module of the Note 17 Pro is raised a little bit in comparison to the Note 17 Pro Max. The two phones also come in their own unique colour options.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro comes in Black, Satin Orange, Purple and Sky Blue. Meanwhile, the Note 17 Pro Max will be available in Black, Green, Purple, and Cloud Blush

Redmi Note 17 Pro vs Redmi Note 17 Pro Max: Display

  • Both phones share the exact 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel and 120 Hz refresh rate
  • The Pro Max supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, which are missing in the regular Pro
  • Note 17 Pro Max boasts a 2,000-nit high-brightness mode

On paper, both phones are evenly matched in display size and resolution, as they come with a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Plus, you are getting the same Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection on both the Redmi Note 17 Pro and the Pro Max.

Even the pixel density is the same at 441 PPI, along with 3,500 nits peak brightness and a 240 Hz touch sampling rate.

But the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max supports HDR 10+ and Dolby Vision. This means that HDR content will look better on the Pro Max. And its 2,000 nits HBM brightness against the Note 17 Pro's 1800 nits should hold up a little better in sustained outdoor use.

Redmi Note 17 Pro vs Redmi Note 17 Pro Max: Processor

  • Redmi Note 17 Pro runs the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 processor
  • Redmi Note 17 Pro Max comes with the newer Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset
  • The Pro Max uses faster UFS 4.1 on its 256GB variants, while the Pro tops out at UFS 3.1

This is where the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max actually starts flexing its muscles. It comes with the new Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset compared to the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 processor on the Note 17 Pro. The hardware difference offers better graphics processing and higher CPU clock speed.

In terms of RAM options, the Note 17 Pro gets the older LPDDR4X RAM type, while the Note 17 Pro Max enjoys the faster LPDDR5X RAM. The same goes for storage, where the Note 17 Pro Max comes equipped with UFS 4.1 storage, which is double the speed of the UFS 3.1-type storage used in the Redmi Note 17 Pro.

This may not make much difference in day-to-day use, but gaming will be better on the Note 17 Pro Max.

Redmi Note 17 Pro vs Redmi Note 17 Pro Max: Camera

  • Both phones have a 50 MP main camera with OIS, but the Pro Max uses a larger sensor
  • Redmi Note 17 Pro has a 16 MP selfie camera, while the Note 17 Pro Max offers a 32 MP front shooter

In the camera department, you will find that the Redmi Note 17 Pro and the Note 17 Pro Max have a 50 MP main camera with OIS along with an 8 MP ultrawide lens.

But Redmi is using a larger f/1.5 sensor on the Note 17 Pro Max, which will offer better low-light image quality in comparison to the smaller f/1.8 lens on the Note 17 Pro.

In videos, the base Note 17 Pro is capped to 1080p @ 30 FPS recording from its main, ultrawide and front cameras. However, the Note 17 Pro Max can shoot 4K @ 30 FPS as well as 1080p @ 60 FPS from its main and front cameras.

Even the selfie camera is better on the Pro Max with a 32 MP shooter, which should provide sharper image quality. So if you are looking for the best camera phone among these two, then the Note 17 Pro Max wins by default.

  • Redmi Note 17 Pro packs an 8,340mAh battery with 67W wired charging

Battery capacity is where the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max earns its title. It ships with a 10,000mAh battery capacity, matched only by the Realme P4 Power. We got a 2-day battery life in our Realme P4 Power review, and I expect the same from the Pro Max here. The phone supports 100W fast charging.

I would say both phones are good midrange devices, but the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max is definitely the better of the two. It delivers a faster chipset, a better camera system with 4K video, a much bigger battery, and faster charging to match.

If you're on a tighter budget and mainly use your phone for calls, social media, and casual photography, the Redmi Note 17 Pro still covers the basics well. But if 4K video, low-light photography, or multi-day battery life matters to you at all, the Pro Max is worth stretching for.
