Last year, Oppo and OnePlus revealed ColorOS 16 and OxygenOS 16 updates based on Android 16. Both OS skins introduced several new features, AI capabilities, system-wide fluidity and app animations. Now, just days after Google officially announced the Android 17 Beta 1 update, ColorOS 17 and OxygenOS 17 have surfaced online, with both OSes reportedly taking fluidity and performance to the next level.
ColorOS 17 and OxygenOS 17 leak reveal big upgrades
A new OnePlus Telegram community chatroom post has outlined several of the key features that are making their way via the ColorOS 17 and OxygenOS 17 updates. Based on Android 17, both OS skins are reportedly bringing several system-level improvements, which will greatly improve the already impressive software experience on Oppo and OnePlus phones.

For instance, the post mentions smoother in-app camera zoom support for both photos and videos, which is said to greatly improve the level of stability while switching lenses, for a jitter-free experience. Since there is no mention of a revamped camera UI, we believe that both brands will improve the existing experience on ColorOS 16 and OxygenOS 16.
Alongside the camera, the post also mentions a complete performance jump with ColorOS 17 and OxygenOS 17. From reduced UI frame drops to responsive and fluid scrolling and animations, it looks like Oppo is planning a major upgrade to its Luminous Rendering Engine introduced with Android 16.

Aside from that, several low-level optimisations are also reportedly making way via ColorOS 17 and OxygenOS 17. The post mentions foundational upgrades that will target CPU usage and garbage collection time to reduce app stutters and jittery animations. This will also help the OS enable better background app retention and idle battery drain optimisation.
All in all, it looks like while ColorOS 16 and OxygenOS 16 focused on bringing new features to the OS skins, the upcoming iterations will shift focus towards generational refinements and heightened user experience. That said, at the time of writing, these are mere speculations, so take them with a pinch of salt. Since Oppo and OnePlus unveil their next-gen OS around the end of the calendar year, expect more concrete details to emerge in the coming months.
