Apple's next ultra-thin iPhone, widely tipped as the iPhone Air 2, may benefit from a major Samsung Display OLED upgrade. This sole upgrade could potentially bring a thinner screen with better visuals and a better battery life to the iPhone Air 2, making it a lot more enticing than its predecessor.

Samsung's Advanced OLED Technology Could Power the iPhone Air 2

According to a new report from South Korean publication TheElec, Apple could adopt Samsung Display's advanced Colour Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) OLED technology for the iPhone Air 2 display. Now, this premium panel design removes the traditional polarising plates and overhauls how colour filters are placed within the display stack. This ultimately results in higher light efficiency, reduced power draw and a leaner panel.

The potential advantage here is two-fold. First, by eliminating the polariser, a layer which eats up light output, CoE OLED can achieve the same brightness levels using less power. That means Apple could sustain strong battery life despite the Air 2's expected ultra-thin form.

Secondly, a thinner display directly contributes to a sleeker profile, making it all the more paper-thin. Samsung's expertise with this tech isn't new, as the South Korean giant has been using CoE panels for its foldable phones for a while now, first introduced with the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Even the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 continues to use the same display tech.

While the iPhone Air 2 launch date or timeline is not known yet, rumours suggest the phone could arrive in 2027 with notable upgrades like dual rear cameras. The suggested refined design is just the cherry on top.
