Apple Maps has quietly received Transit support in India, allowing iPhone users to get public transport directions alongside existing driving and walking routes. The feature appears to have gone live without an official announcement from Apple.

The rollout was first spotted by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, and we've independently verified it.

Interestingly, India is still missing from Apple's official list of countries and regions where Transit is available. This suggests that the Cupertino giant may be gradually rolling out the feature to iPhones.

With Transit enabled, Apple Maps can now suggest public transport routes for destinations, including information such as departure times, arrival times, connections and fares, where available.

Users can also plan journeys based on a specific departure or arrival time rather than simply getting routes for the current time. Apple Maps also offers a dedicated Transit view that highlights public transport lines and nearby stops. This is similar to how Google Maps already functions.

The exact information available can vary depending on the city and transport operator. Apple supports additional Transit features in some regions, including real-time vehicle information, service disruption alerts and notifications when users are approaching their stop.

However, it remains unclear how extensively these features are supported across India. Transit support gives Apple Maps a more practical use case for Indian commuters who depend on buses, metros and trains.

Until now, Apple's navigation app has primarily been useful for driving and walking directions, while Google Maps has offered more established public transport navigation in India.

The quiet rollout is nevertheless a notable upgrade for iPhone users in India, particularly those who regularly use public transport.
