First Official Look at Nothing OS 5.0 Is Here Ahead of next Week's Launch

After confirming the Nothing OS 5.0 launch date for August 25, 2026, in classic Nothing fashion, the brand has started teasing subtle details about the upcoming Android 17-based update. The company's CEO and co-founder, Carl Pei, has taken to X to reveal a redesigned status bar in Nothing OS 5.0.

Pei's X post reads "The details are not details. They make the design," and shares a three-second video which showcases the status bar of a Nothing phone running Nothing OS 5.0. While it seems to be a regular video at first, those on the older Nothing OS versions will instantly be able to tell the difference.

We used our Nothing Phone 4a Pro running Nothing OS 4.1 to make a note of these differences.

For starters, the animation when transitioning from aeroplane mode to normal mode is more seamless, with the aeroplane icon coming in from the bottom to replace the Wi-Fi and cellular network icons when turned on. When turned off, the aeroplane icon exits from the top and the other icons appear. This is a subtle yet vital improvement from the rather jump-cut-like animation on Nothing OS 4.1.

Next, instead of displaying the status bar icons in white, we see them in black. Upon closer inspection, the time icon appears to be less stretched than before. Meanwhile, the Wi-Fi icon and aeroplane mode icons appear to be more circular and refined than before.

The DND icon also appears slightly easier on the eyes, now mostly black with a smaller transparent horizontal line in the middle displaying the respective wallpaper's colours.

Talking about wallpapers, we see a new wallpaper with colourful gradient specks scattered across. Nothing OS 5.0 could bring more such wallpapers to Nothing phones, from the looks of it.

As they say, the devil indeed is in the details. However, we certainly hope that Nothing OS 5.0 brings more than subtle changes across the UI. The Nothing OS 5.0 Gallery App update, which rolled out last month, does bring some hope, as we did see a frosted glass design in the UI this time around.

So, we can hope the same frosted glass effect extends to other corners of the UI. However, with the Nothing OS 5.0 launch just a week away, expect the brand to showcase the UI via more teasers in the coming days. Stay tuned for all the updates.
