Samsung may finally stop holding back its own flagship displays. The upcoming Galaxy S27 series is reportedly set to adopt the company’s newer OLED technology, after Samsung has spent recent generations using older panels on its own phones while supplying its latest displays to competing flagships.
Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra to Get M16 OLED Display
South Korean tech publication ETNews reports that the higher-end Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra will debut with Samsung's latest M16 OLED displays. This could mark a significant leap in power efficiency, peak brightness, panel longevity and colour accuracy.
This aligns with a recent leak that pointed out how Samsung will differentiate its Galaxy S27 series. Samsung's M16 OLED is also expected to integrate a native Privacy Display feature for extra privacy. Additionally, it features COE technology (Colour Filter on Encapsulation) for better optical performance.
For those unaware, Samsung already supplies its M16 OLED panels to its competitors such as the iPhone 18 Pro and Pixel 11 series. Even the upcoming iQOO 16 is confirmed to boast an M16 display. Adding the same to its Pro and Ultra smartphones should ensure Samsung isn't trailing behind.
That said, the standard Samsung Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ will likely also receive display upgrades, albeit to the older M14 OLEDs from the M13. While it's a bummer that standard phones are being left out, M14 still offers a huge upgrade. It brings higher peak brightness, better power efficiency, and deuterium emitters for durability.
ETMoney also suggest that Samsung's display innovations aren't stopping anytime soon. The Galaxy Z Fold 9, Z Fold 9 Ultra and Z Flip 9, slated for 2027, could also transition away from M13 panels in favour of the new M16 panels.
The lack of Samsung's newest displays in the brand's own smartphones is quite ironic, but we're glad Samsung is willing to fill the void and offer a better experience to consumers. The Galaxy S27 series is expected to be unveiled in February 2026, and more information should surface as we inch closer to launch, so stay tuned.
