Google is finally completing its transition from Google Assistant to Gemini. The company has confirmed that Google Assistant will be permanently discontinued on Android starting in September 2026, with Gemini becoming the platform's only AI assistant.
Google's Pulling the Plug on Google Assistant
Google Assistant will be discontinued on September 4, 2026, leaving Gemini as the sole AI assistant on Android. Users took to Reddit to share that Google has detailed the shutdown in an official email. As per this email, the Google Assistant shutdown commences in early September and the complete rollout will likely take several weeks to reach all users.
Currently, users can still toggle between Gemini and Assistant in the Google app or Gemini app settings. However, once the update reaches your hardware, the option to revert to the old Assistant will disappear permanently.
For those unaware, Google announced that it will be discontinuing Google Assistant back in 2024, and it was supposed to stop working in 2025 before being delayed to 2026. Assistant will not just stop on Android but also on Wear OS, Connected audio devices and headphones and vehicles using phone-projected Android Auto.
One exception to this is vehicles equipped with Google built-in, and they're expected to retain their classic voice-assisted functionality well past the summer deadline. For those unaware, Google has already replaced Assistant Go with Gemini Go on Android Go phones.
Google has also indicated that Gemini on Google Home smart speakers, connected devices and Google TV is still being actively developed. However, the brand assures that the jump to Gemini will be seamless.
This marks the end of the road for Google Assistant, a software that pretty much laid the foundation for current AI experiences on Android. It was fast, slick and more responsive than anything in the market at that time, giving Siri, Cortana and Alexa a run for their money.
And as Android fans bid Assistant adieu, they're left with memories of the tool helping them boost their productivity. Needless to say, Assistant helped shape the Google Pixel experience into what it is today. Rest in peace!
