Google is expanding Gemini's capabilities to Google Wallet, allowing the AI to track expenses and act as a personal manager. The integration allows users to ask questions about passes and tickets and get useful insights.
Spotted first by 9to5Google, instead of manually opening the Wallet app to dig for information, users can ask Gemini to pull up upcoming boarding passes, retrieve an airline loyalty number or summarise the current benefits on their saved rewards cards.
Beyond the pass benefits, users can also connect their financial accounts to Google Wallet via Plaid. Once done, Gemini can read users' bank transaction history. They can then ask the AI to calculate exactly how much money was spent on groceries last month or request a granular breakdown of where the money went.
The AI will then sift through the linked accounts and provide all the insights needed. This could also allow Gemini to generate personalised budgets based on spending habits, making users more aware of where they're spending the most money.
Like most of Google's feature rollouts, the Gemini integration in Wallet is currently available only in the US. It is rolling out gradually to all Android users and can be used with the @Google Wallet prompt in the Gemini app.
Besides the Wallet integration, the Google Call for Me feature was also recently rolled out. It uses Gemini to contact businesses on users' behalf and confirm bookings, navigate menus or get business hours. It's also currently only available on the Pixel 11 series in the US.
While Google notes that Gemini can't make purchases for users, the reality of granting an AI unrestricted access to users' financial lives is quite unsettling. Considering users need to have their Gemini Apps activity turned on, their financial queries and AI analysis are actively logged.
We should hear more about Google's side of things and how privacy is managed with Plaid, which has been responsible for handling bank accounts for Google since the Google Pay app days. More information should follow with a wider rollout, so stay tuned.
