Google has announced a visual design change for its Phone, Messages and Contacts applications. The refreshed icons adhere to the Material 3 Expressive design language, which adds a certain depth to them for a visually pleasing experience.
The official announcement suggests the redesign was driven by user feedback. The Phone, Messages and Contacts icons now boast sharper visuals and a 3D design language, ditching the flat-looking older material icons.

The new icons also incorporate subtle yet crisp gradients across the new artwork. Google also says the updated curvature and colour palettes were chosen to better align these apps with the existing branding of Google services.
While the icons will now blend in much more easily with the pack of Google's other Material 3 Expressive icons, the brand says the changes are limited to the icons. The core UI experience and features remain unchanged.
The rollout of these icons is expected to take place gradually over the next few weeks. Users can head over to the Phone, Messages and Contacts app pages to see if the newly updated icon is rolling out to them.
