WhatsApp could soon require you to keep your KYC-verified SIM inserted in your phone to continue using your account. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India will enforce SIM binding for messaging apps starting January 1, 2027. Users will be required to have a KYC-linked SIM card in the device to continue using these services.
Under the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and other apps must link user accounts to KYC-verified SIM cards on the user's device. The directive, first issued on November 28, 2025, is aimed at curbing cyber fraud by tightening the link between messaging accounts and verified mobile numbers.

Failing to comply with these rules could result in immediate termination of the account or services, especially if the user or their SIM is linked to suspected fraud cases.
What Is SIM Binding?
SIM binding requires messaging apps to ensure that each user account is tied to the SIM card registered to the mobile number used during sign-up.
The SIM must stay inside the user’s device for the account to remain active. Simply having the registered number is not enough if the SIM itself is missing or unavailable.

Which Phones Will Be Affected?
The rules could affect smartphone users who operate WhatsApp or Telegram without keeping the registered SIM card inserted. This includes both Apple iPhones and Android devices. Apple has reportedly added support for SIM binding in iOS, with an update released in September 2026 to detect when an iPhone has a SIM or not.
Users who access their messaging accounts across multiple devices, travel abroad, or use a phone primarily over Wi-Fi may also need to check how the rules affect their setup. Tablet and secondary phone owners who do not have the registered SIM inserted could face disruptions as well.
WhatsApp Web and other linked device users may be required to reconnect their sessions once the rules are enforced. Note that the last date to comply with these SIM binding rules is stated as December 31, 2026, while the last operational date for services that haven't complied is January 1, 2027.
