WhatsApp is testing a new username search feature on Android, which might soon let users look up people by their username. Spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta 2.25.24.22 build, this could make finding friends and connecting on the app a lot easier without needing their phone number.
Spotted by WABetaInfo, the WhatsApp username search feature is currently in development and was discovered in the code of the beta build. The reliable feature tracker also gave us a good look at how the new username search feature will work.

As it is evident from the above screenshot, using the floating action button in the Chats tab, people on WhatsApp will be able to search for other users via their usernames. This new feature will allow users to not only search for existing contacts but also discover new users and search for groups.
The latest report claims that once a WhatsApp username is searched, the platform will go through its entire database to display relevant information matching the search. If a matching account is found, WhatsApp will display the result. It is also important to note that depending on the privacy setting of the searched profile, details like profile picture and name will be displayed.
One of the key aspects of this new search feature will be the ability to talk to others without needing their phone number. Users can directly start a chat with the searched user and their chats will still remain end-to-end encrypted. These chats will have the full-fledged suite of WhatsApp features, similar to a usual chat, like media sharing, voice and video calls and more.
Also, since these chats will reside within the Chats tab, users can revisit them in the future conveniently. As of now, WABetaInfo claims that users won't have the option to hide their names from appearing in search results. However, there will be the option of enabling a username key, which will basically act as a passcode for first-time messages.

To further safeguard its users, WhatsApp will reportedly roll out a spam protection mechanism for the upcoming WhatsApp username feature. This system will flag suspicious behaviour and take action against anyone misusing usernames to hit up others.
For new users, setting up a WhatsApp username will be optional if they only want to chat with known contacts and colleagues. Since the feature is still in development, it’s unclear when WhatsApp will roll out username search to beta testers. However, one can expect it to arrive soon.
