Meta-owned WhatsApp has been adding a lot of new features lately, such as WhatsApp guest calls and message scheduling. Now, the company is working on a feature many users have wanted for years: an option to send photos and videos in original quality, without any compression.
WhatsApp to Soon Allow "Original" Quality Media
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is building an option to send photos and videos in original quality, without any compression, as part of the WhatsApp Plus subscription service. The feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.44.12.
For context, WhatsApp currently lets users send photos and videos in either Standard or HD quality. Standard compresses media to save data, while HD compresses it less. However, even HD media gets compressed, so receivers don’t get the exact file the sender shot.
The new Original option could fix that. It is said to send your photos and videos without compression, so the person on the other end gets the file exactly as it was saved on your phone.
The report says that users will be able to choose it from the same quality menu in the media editor, where they currently pick between Standard and HD.
More importantly, WABetaInfo says original quality sharing is planned for WhatsApp Plus subscribers only. WhatsApp Plus launched in India for Rs 79 per month a few months ago. Right now, it mostly offers cosmetic extras like exclusive themes and icons, special stickers and the ability to pin more chats.
That said, the original media quality feature is still under development and isn’t available to beta testers yet. WhatsApp has not said when the feature will roll out. So, stay tuned.
