Summary

  • The EvoFox Hailstone S by Amkette is a small, lightweight phone cooler that keeps thermals under control while gaming and doing other demanding tasks.
  • It connects via USB-C, clamps to the phone, includes three levels of cooling, and controllable RGB lighting.
  • For Rs 689, the EvoFox Hailstone S offers one of the cheapest ways to manage an overheating phone.

There’s nothing worse than being in a firefight only to find your phone is toast. After losing one too many games to a phone unable to take the heat anymore, I was considering putting it down for good, perhaps replacing it with one of those proper gaming phones. But they all cost a pretty penny. So instead, I decided to check out a phone cooler I’d seen a friend using and that was everything I needed to get back to winning ways.

The one I got was the EvoFox Hailstone S by Amkette, a cute little cooler that clamps to the phone and keeps the heat in check.

Hailstone S includes 7 blades spinning at 5000 RPM to dissipate heat, with three different levels of cooling: Normal, Moderate, and Extreme. But my games get heated, and so does my phone, so Extreme is what I keep it at.

And it worked! With the EvoFox Hailstone S, my phone was 10–11°C cooler than it would be without it. For example, this meant that my phone's back panel hovered around 34°C instead of the usual sweaty 45°C, so the phone stayed comfortable in hand and well away from throttling territory.

EvoFox Hailstone S charges with the regular Type-C cable and includes RGB lights, which can be controlled with the touch of a button.

As it clamps to the back of the phone, I found it best to keep the cooler placed in the middle. This way, it gave my fingers something to rest against and grip the phone better. Hailstone S is compatible with a tripod mount, but it’s not included in the box.

Of course, it isn’t just for gaming. My phone tends to get hot when I’m streaming live or recording my guitar and the EvoFox Hailstone S helps with that too.

The main thing I was concerned about was the sound of the fans, which has kept me from trying such gadgets before. But I was glad to find the EvoFox quiet as a mouse. I anyway keep my earphones in while gaming. But even without them, there was only a very slight hum that was never audible enough to pull me out of the game.

It’s quite light at 78g and it hardly feels like it’s there at all. But it’s there, quietly working its magic, while the game goes on. At Rs 689 (available on Amazon), it's now the most useful gaming accessory I own.

In a market where gaming phones cost a premium, EvoFox Hailstone has brought my phone back from the grave to fight the good fight, with a cool head, quiet and some colours.
