Motorola has officially unveiled a long-term partnership with GrapheneOS at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 in Barcelona. This collaboration is expected to bring the highly secure, privacy-focused GrapheneOS operating system to upcoming Motorola smartphones.
GrapheneOS on Motorola phones could arrive in 2027
After lots of teasing and rumours surrounding the partnership, GrapheneOS' official X handle has finally unveiled that the OS will come pre-installed on select Motorola phones in the future. For those unaware, GrapheneOS is a hardened, privacy-first operating system based on AOSP, which has been exclusive to Google Pixels so far.

The exclusivity existed because Pixels were the only phones meeting GrapheneOS' security and hardware requirements. That could change with this Motorola partnership, which could help break this monopoly to create the first non-Pixel hardware specifically created from the ground up for GrapheneOS compatibility.
While neither Motorola nor GrapheneOS' official posts reveal the potential timeline when we would see the partnership in fruition, in a reply to a comment, GrapheneOS revealed that the first GrapheneOS-powered Moto smartphone could arrive in 2027.

Speaking on the current compatibility, GrapheneOS also replied to one of the comments about current phones meeting the security requirements. It appears that none of the legacy smartphones will get GrapheneOS support, but only those that will launch with a future version of Qualcomm SPU (Mobile Security Suite).
Beyond developing a dedicated GrapheneOS phone, Motorola also plans to integrate select security features and concepts from GrapheneOS into its standard phone lineup over the coming months. By combining GrapheneOS's engineering with Moto's security expertise and Lenovo's ThinkShield solutions, the collaboration is expected to bolster a new generation of privacy.
Alongside the OS collaboration, Motorola is also expanding its enterprise and consumer ecosystems with new tools built on the ThinkShield platform. For users, the Moto Secure app will act like a central hub for privacy tools powered by ThinkShield. A new feature called Private Image Data automatically scrubs sensitive metadata for captured images and runs in the background. It will be rolled out to the Motorola Signature first in the coming months.
A spokesperson for the OS praised the alliance, stating it "marks a significant milestone in expanding GrapheneOS' reach" and that "[they] applaud Motorola for taking this meaningful step toward advancing mobile security". More information about this partnership should be unveiled when we're nearing transitioning into 2027; until then, stay tuned.
