The iPhone Duo missed out on Face ID due to the lack of physical space inside the chassis. However, it appears that Apple is already testing the Duo's successor, with early reports citing that it could replace Touch ID.
According to the information shared by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple's internal prototypes for the iPhone Duo 2 have successfully integrated Face ID. However, the catch is that the biometric sensor is being tested beneath the outer cover display and not under the wide main display.

The iPhone 18 Pro arrived with a smaller notch thanks to an upgraded IR camera setup. Gurman says that, much like the iPhone 18 Pro, the Duo 2 and the upcoming twentieth-anniversary iPhone Pro could hide both the flood illuminator and infrared camera completely behind the glass. This would drastically shrink or eliminate the display cutout.
He also noted that Apple engineers are exploring ways to implement the Action button on the foldable chassis, though this addition is less certain to make it to the final product.
That said, it's worth remembering that these are still prototypes. It's possible that the second-generation iPhone Duo could retain Touch ID, and we may see Face ID in the third generation.
It will also be interesting to see whether Apple ditches the current Touch ID power button entirely or retains dual biometrics for added convenience.
Beyond iPhone Duo 2, there have been rumours about Apple working on three new foldable smartphones with different form factors. They are the iPhone Duo Max, iPhone Duo SE and an iPhone Duo Mini, the latter being a clamshell foldable.
Additionally, the brand is also working on a HomeView Pro with a 360-degree robotic arm, and is expected to launch in 2027 to 2028. To end this year, Apple has announced an event on October 28, 2026, where it is expected to unveil its newest MacBook Pro laptops with touch screen displays and an OLED iPad Mini.
