A new Google Play Services update is rolling out, with Google introducing quality-of-life improvements to Android's payment framework. The improvements span Google Wallet, Google Play Store and Google Pay, improving the overall experience.
As detailed in its official changelog, Google Play Services V26.40 is now available. The main highlight of the update is the standalone native receipt scanner for Google Wallet. This arrives right after Google Wallet's Cards UI enhancement, which rolled out recently.

This tool lets users quickly digitise and track their physical receipts without manually entering transaction details. On payments, the update also addresses a long-standing annoyance with digital payments – cryptic billing alerts.
Moving forward, Google Wallet transaction notifications will display clean and easily identifiable merchant names. Additionally, the software is gaining an in-app message centre.

While the exact purpose of the same is unknown, earlier findings suggest this could be used to organise passes, alerts and tickets automatically from the user's Gmail account.
Lastly, the update helps users fly through Google Play web checkout on Chrome. Users who supply their name, email and phone number to a merchant will now automatically bypass the clunky Payment Request interface, resulting in a seamless transaction flow.
And with every new update, there's a new AI feature, and in Google Play Store v53.6's case, it's the new "Ask Play" feature. For starters, it will now generate summarised insights pulled directly from real user reviews – complete with citations – to help users quickly gauge an app's quality.

Additionally, community posts are also gaining an AI Summary feature to condense trending discussions, while a reorganised Subscription centre makes it easier to track active paid services.
Collectively, these quality of life additions and improvements should result in a more seamless checkout, buying and archiving experiences on Android.
