The iPhone Handoff is a feature that was surprisingly absent from iOS 27 Beta releases or the WWDC 2026 keynote. It aims to solve a major headache for dual-device owners, letting them seamlessly swap between two separate iPhones using the same number.
Thanks to a video demo from MacRumors forum user pdfu, we finally have a look at iPhone Handoff in action. Running the setup through Xcode 27's Device Hub, the user found that the feature's setup process forces a hierarchy where one iPhone becomes the primary daily driver, while the other acts as a companion.
The primary phone holds the main eSIM and takes care of all the core cellular settings. The secondary device is issued a "companion eSIM" tag. Once activated, users can just grab whichever phone they need and go.
The video also shows the entire setup process, which is fairly simple and self-explanatory. Users initiate Handoff -> the other phone receives the prompt -> users confirm the Handoff -> eSIM is transferred. Once done, one phone becomes the main, and the other becomes a companion.

Apple even thought ahead regarding location tracking, as your broadcasted location follows whichever iPhone is currently active, preventing any Find My tracking glitches. However, there's a catch.
Apple might not be able to pull this off alone, as the feature requires Carriers to support it. Early forum leaks point to T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany as being among the first to support the protocol.
Adding to his findings, the user also said that users will see a Dynamic Island notification on unlock when iPhone Handoff transfers the service.
The Handoff feature adds to an already extensive list of iOS 27 features, which includes a revamped Siri experience with Siri AI, Visual Intelligence and Photo Editing features. It also brings changes to Liquid Glass, with the ability to control glass effects and up to a 30% improvement in performance.
Apple just pushed iOS 27 Beta 8, which will soon be followed by a Release Candidate update next week. iOS 27 stable should roll out right after Apple's Rise & Shine event on September 9, 2026.
