The upcoming iOS 27 update is expected to bring major changes to iOS, including a new automatic tab grouping feature in the Safari app. It is expected to streamline the tab grouping experience for users who juggle between multiple tabs, groups and topics.

iOS 27 Could Introduce Automatic Tab Grouping in Safari

According to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly testing a new feature in iOS 27, which will allow the Safari app to intelligently group tabs based on topics and the user's browsing behaviour.

It will reportedly build on the existing Tab Groups system and will eliminate the need to manually sort and group tabs, making the browsing experience seamless. This is similar to what Google Chrome offers with its web store extension support and the new built-in AI "organiser" feature.

Moreover, in the test version of iOS 27, Apple has reportedly unlocked a new "Organise Tabs" option in Safari which allows users to choose between manual grouping and automatic grouping. Gurman states that when the automatic choice is selected, the system says that “tabs will group into topics you browse".

Although the automatic tab grouping feature in Safari is not explicitly stated as an Apple Intelligence feature, Gurman's report does indicate some form of Apple Intelligence being used to achieve this. This makes sense, especially since a Gemini-powered Siri app is also on the way to transform the way iPhone users operate their phones.

Hence, all Apple Intelligence-eligible devices should ideally be getting the upcoming automatic tab grouping feature in Safari. It is also expected to expand to macOS 27 and also iPadOS 27. While Apple has not officially confirmed these plans, the report suggests the company is actively testing the feature internally and could debut at the upcoming WWDC 2026 event.
