Summary

  • Nothing has started the stable version rollout of Nothing OS 4.0 to Phone (2), Phone (2a) and Phone (3a) series in India.
  • The Android 16-based update brings features like AI usage dashboard, Extra Dark Mode, new lock screen faces and more.
  • Nothing Phone (3a) Lite will receive the update next year and eligible CMF smartphones will get it in December 2025.

After two months of beta testing, Nothing finally began the stable rollout of Nothing OS 4.0 last week. It first reached the Nothing Phone (3) and now, the update is available to download in the newer Phone (3a) series and the older Phone (2a) series and the Nothing Phone (2).

Nothing OS 4.0 is here for older Nothing smartphones

As Nothing promised a few days ago, the Nothing OS 4.0 update is now going live for the Nothing Phone (2), Nothing Phone (3a) series and the Nothing Phone (2a) series in India. All the smartphone models here at Beebom got the update and we decided to install it on the older Nothing Phone (2).

The update size on the smartphone is 3.26 GB and brings several new Nothing OS 4.0 features like the Extra Dark Mode option, updated first-party Nothing icons, new Camera Presets and more. However, do note that while the Phone (2a) series and the more recent Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro will gain the new AI summary dashboard feature, the Phone (2) will miss out on that. The reason is simply that the 2023 model doesn't have the physical Essential Key and in turn, access to Essential Space.

With that said, here's a quick rundown of the Nothing OS 4.0 Stable update changelog on the Phone (2):

  • Pop-up View: Now supports two floating icons for better multitasking.
  • New lock screen clock faces: Two fresh designs for more personalisation options.
  • Nothing Apps refresh: New icons for weather, gallery, recorder and more.
  • Extra dark mode: A deeper, more immersive dark theme experience.
  • Glyph Progress: It now uses Android 16's Live Update notifications feature.
  • Camera enhancements: A new "Stretch" preset has been added, developed in collaboration with photographer Jordan Hemingway. The new preset enhances shadows and highlights for a cinematic tone.
  • Essential Apps and Playground: Let users create custom widgets with AI and explore community creations such as camera presets and EQ profiles.

Apart from this, there is also a new app optimisation tool to improve startup speeds, which can be accessed via Settings -> Apps -> App Optimisation. That said, to install the update, head over to Settings -> About phone -> Software info -> Nothing OS to install the latest OS 4.0 update.

As for the other Nothing OS 4.0 eligible devices, the all-new Nothing Phone (3a) Lite will get the update in January 2026, while all the other eligible CMF smartphones will start receiving in December 2025.
