Nothing released the first open beta for Nothing OS 5.0 last week for Phone (3) users, and today the company confirmed that it is already working on the Nothing OS 5.1 update, which will finally bring the option to remap the Essential Key.
Essential Key Remapping Is Coming with Nothing OS 5.1
Nothing's software product director, Dan Elseworth, shared a community post today titled "How we build". In the post, he shared a brief snippet about what's next. He mentioned that they have already started work on the Nothing OS 5.1 update, and it will be "a smaller release, but with a few exciting changes. (We will finally be allowing users to remap the Essential Key, for example)".

This is a big deal for many Nothing Phone users, as it would finally allow them to activate the Essential Key for other apps and actions.
For those who don't know, Nothing introduced Essential Key with the Nothing Phone (3a), and it triggers the Essential AI screenshot and voice notes. Dan also mentioned that they have started focusing on Nothing OS 6.0, arriving in 2027.
Besides this, it is unclear what other features will arrive with the Nothing OS 5.1 update or when it will arrive. But we speculate that it will be rolled out first on the Nothing Phone (3) and other Nothing OS 5.0-supported devices starting early next year. But take it with a grain of salt.
