Summary

  • Qualcomm has silently launched the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 chipset for upcoming mid-range smartphones.
  • The processor is manufactured on TSMC's 4nm process and brings a 36% improvement in CPU and 59% improvement in GPU performance.
  • Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 supports up to 200MP camera sensors with hardware-level Multi-Frame Noise Reduction for improved low-light performance.

Chip manufacturer Qualcomm has quietly launched its latest mobile SoC for the affordable, mid-range segment, the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4. The chipset brings considerable improvements from the previous generation, on paper, one of them being the shift to TSMC's 4nm manufacturing process.

Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 features considerable performance improvements

The Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 is an octa-core chip with four Kryo performance cores clocked at 2.4 GHz and four efficiency cores at 1.8 GHz. The shift to the 4nm TSMC process allows for major gains in speed and power efficiency. However, understandably, don't expect it to perform as well as the likes of chipsets like the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 or even the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3.

However, there is a substantial improvement compared to the last-gen Snapdragon 6s Gen 3, which was based on TSMC's 6nm process. Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 delivers up to 36% better CPU performance and a 59% faster GPU performance. Storage and RAM-wise, the 6s Gen 4 includes support for UFS 3.1 and up to 12 GB 3200MHz LPDDR5x RAM.

For gaming and media, the processor supports FHD+ displays with up to 144Hz refresh rate, and includes features from the Snapdragon Elite Gaming suite like Variable Rate Shading and Quick Touch optimisations for reduced touch latency.

Additionally, the 6s Gen 4 now supports up to 200MP camera sensors with hardware-level Multi-Frame Noise Reduction for improved low-light performance. Connectivity is also getting an upgrade, with the SoC supporting Qualcomm's Release 16 5G modem, Wi-Fi 6E with speeds of up to 2.9 Gbps, and Bluetooth 5.4.

Qualcomm has yet to announce its partners who will be using the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 first. However, since manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo and Motorola have been quick to adopt the latest from the chip giant, it won't be surprising to see the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 powering some of the best phones under Rs 20,000 by the end of 2025.
