Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 launched at the Galaxy Unpacked 2026 event on July 22, 2026, but one of their biggest upgrades wasn't announced on stage. During a media briefing, the brand confirmed that all three foldables use Silicon Carbon batteries.

While you won't find this key detail in any of the foldable's specs sheets, the brand has confirmed it via multiple media briefings (thanks to folks over at 9to5Google, Android Police, etc).

But why is this a big deal? For those unaware, Silicon Carbon batteries can store more charge while remaining the same size as their Lithium-ion counterparts. However, while rival brands have pushed the tech past the 10,000mAh mark, Samsung is playing it safe with reasonably sized cells to optimise it for slimmer designs.

As a result, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 manages to house a 4,800mAh battery within a smaller chassis. The premium Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra takes things further, securing a generous 5,000mAh capacity despite sporting a much thinner profile than its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

When questioned, Samsung emphasised that performance, longevity and safety remain the brand's core focus. Approaching the new technology with utmost care over raw battery capacity appears to be its top priority.

Besides, to complement the new materials, Samsung has also increased the charging speeds to 45W across both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra (versus 25W last year). There are also enhanced 20W wireless charging capabilities.

While we may see Samsung push for larger capacities in future iterations, this transition marks a key step toward bettering the endurance of Samsung smartphones. The tech could trickle down to its upcoming flagship Galaxy S27 series as well.
