A fresh batch of protective cases has surfaced for Samsung's Galaxy S27 Ultra, shedding light on the phone's rear design ahead of its expected January 2027 launch. Interestingly, the case reveals a surprising omission, or at least what looks like a missing autofocus sensor.
The case designs from Chinese manufacturers were posted on X by Ice Universe, providing a clearer picture of the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra rear panel. It includes a generic Silicone case, a hard case with a MagSafe ring, and a clear shockproof case with clean cutouts for the cameras and sensors. The fourth has an issue.
Early Galaxy S27 Ultra CAD-based renders suggested a pill-shaped cutout housing the telephoto and autofocus sensors, and the new cases do feature cutouts for the same, but there is no designated opening left for the laser autofocus (AF) sensor.
Earlier rumours indicated that the telephoto lens, LED flash, and Laser AF would all share this specific oval section. The missing autofocus sensor cutout creates some confusion. Does this mean Samsung is omitting the Laser AF? Not exactly.
Instead of having it appear at the back, Samsung may choose to hide it beneath the rear glass or integrate it into an existing camera module. It's also possible that the case leak isn't that accurate and needs to be revised, but that's likely not the case (pun intended), considering Ice Universe says these are nearly finished products.
As accessory manufacturers finalise their designs ahead of the official launch, upcoming leaks should confirm whether the autofocus array has been completely redesigned or concealed.
For those unaware, the Galaxy S27 series is expected to consist of the Galaxy S27, Galaxy S27+, Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra, and may launch sometime in February 2027. Until then, stay tuned.
