Samsung's Ultra flagships have traditionally incorporated a 3x telephoto camera for generations, but that could change with the upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra. According to recent industry reports, Samsung could drop the smaller 10 MP 3x Telephoto camera, ending its quad-camera streak that has been a staple since 2020.
Galaxy S27 Ultra Could Drop the 10 MP 3x Telephoto Camera
According to reports from ETNews, this move is a direct consequence of the increasing manufacturing pressures due to the ongoing RAM crisis. To optimise the bill of materials, Samsung could ditch the 10 MP 3x snapper on the Galaxy S27 Ultra, meaning it could only come with three cameras this year.
Other sources have told ETNews that the move also arrives due to the camera technology reaching a saturation point. By eliminating the secondary telephoto lens, the Ultra model will fall in line with the rest of the Galaxy S27 family, including the Plus and Pro, which are all expected to boast triple cameras.
However, despite the reduction in the number of lenses, Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra could see significant camera upgrades. For starters, Samsung may ditch ISOCELL for Sony sensors.
While the main camera could be a 200 MP wide snapper, both the Galaxy S27 Ultra and Galaxy S27 Pro could get a new 50 MP Ultrawide. The new 50 MP 5x telephoto could be exclusive to the Ultra, while the Pro may enjoy a toned-down 12 MP 3x Telephoto.
The front camera might also see a huge upgrade. The Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to arrive with a square 16 MP camera. It may copy Apple's Centre Stage features, with the ability to capture in both 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios and AI tracking capabilities.
The source also suggests that the production of these rear camera modules will be distributed among a diverse group of suppliers to maintain the supply chain. By consolidating the cameras, Samsung aims to prioritise high-resolution optics, while simultaneously cutting down on costs due to the RAM crisis.
More information about the Galaxy S27 Ultra and Pro should be revealed as we inch closer to their supposed February 2027 launch, so stay tuned.
