Summary

  • Samsung may be adding a new laser-drilled metal plate inside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 to reduce display crease.
  • It is also said to bring a bump in the battery capacity and quite possibly the return of the S Pen.
  • The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to launch in July 2026 at an Unpacked event.

It's only been a few months since the debut of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and it looks like Samsung is already working towards the next foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The recent report highlights a significant build quality upgrade allegedly arriving with the smartphone.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 could use a new laser-drilled metal plate

As per South Korean media publication Dealsite, Samsung is looking to introduce a new laser-drilled metal plate with the Galaxy Z Fold 8. This new technology is said to reduce the crease of the foldable display significantly by distributing the stress on the screen when it is folded.

For context, the current Galaxy Z Fold 7 uses a titanium metal plate, which ensures durability and also helps the smartphone maintain its sleek profile. However, it doesn't add much to the foldable's display. Hence, by incorporating laser drilling technology, Samsung could possibly deliver its most uninterrupted folding display experience ever.

Additionally, Samsung has already unveiled Montflex, its next-gen display technology which is supposed to turn this crease-free display experience into a reality. It is the same display tech that Apple will use for its debut foldable. So, looks like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is also getting a new display tech aside from the new base plate.

Furthermore, the publication has also claimed that the Z Fold 8 could potentially bump the battery capacity to 5,000mAh compared to the 4,400mAh cell inside the Fold 7. Also, surprisingly, it also believes that the S Pen will make a comeback with the Fold 8.

The current Galaxy Z Fold 7 had to let go of the digitizer layer and the stylus support in order to achieve its thin and light profile. So, if the S Pen is indeed making a comeback, it will mean that the brand has figured out a way to make the OLED display support stylus input without needing a digitizer in the first place.

Aside from that, the publication has not revealed any other details of the upcoming foldable smartphone. A few months back, when it was said that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could feature cheaper build quality by swapping the titanium for metal, we thought it was about the brand cutting costs. However, with the latest revelation, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Either way, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is one smartphone to lookout for in 2026. With the debut Apple Fold launching in 2027, Samsung just earned itself plenty of time to lead the foldable smartphone space comfortably.
