Samsung is rolling out a major quality-of-life update to Samsung Wallet on Samsung Galaxy phones in India. The update introduces fingerprint authentication into the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) framework for easier and more secure transactions.
Samsung Brings PIN-Free UPI Transactions
Jumping on the bandwagon of integrating NPCI's newest UPI features, Samsung Wallet users can now authorise UPI payments of up to Rs 10,000 using their phone's fingerprint scanner.
This streamlines the previously laborious process of manually entering a PIN for every transaction, speeding up the checkout process. This ensures the PIN stays protected and users don't lock themselves out by accidentally entering the wrong PIN.

For those unaware, relying on fingerprint authentication also prevents bad actors from peeking at your phone's screen and gaining access to your UPI PIN.
This feature securely links the biometric hardware already present on supported Galaxy devices directly with India's UPI infrastructure. To reiterate, the integration is specifically capped at the Rs 10,000 transaction threshold.
Samsung Wallet has conveniently added this feature as rumours about Apple Pay coming to India are at an all-time high. Apple recently posted a job listing for a Business Development Manager for Apple Pay.
Considering Apple Pay is expected to skip UPI upon launch, Samsung Wallet will have an edge. However, that could be short-lived, as the job description mentions UPI, which could arrive on Apple Pay soon after launch.
