Summary

  • Samsung could be working on a tall and wide foldable smartphone called the Wide Fold to compete with Apple's first foldable iPhone.
  • The smartphone will arrive in fall 2026 and will feature a 4:3 aspect ratio, the same as iPhone Fold's rumoured size.
  • Rumoured specifications include a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer screen and 25W Qi 2.2 wireless charging support.

Samsung could be working on a new foldable form factor to rival Apple's upcoming foldable smartphone in 2026. New information about the potential new Samsung foldable has dropped, suggesting the smartphone could be a wide foldable being developed to steal the show from Apple.

Samsung Wide Fold could boast a 4:3 aspect ratio

According to South Korea's ETNews, Samsung is working on a "Wide Fold" smartphone to counter Apple's first foldable iPhone. The phone is expected to launch in the fall of 2026, around the same time as Apple's, and will feature a tall, narrow design but with a wider, passport-like shape.

The source claims that the Wide Fold could feature a 7.6-inch AMOLED display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, alongside a 5.4-inch outer screen. These dimensions are largely in line with Apple's rumoured contender, which is also expected to feature a 7.58-inch 4:3 display. Samsung believes that the wider format is much better comfort-wise for reading and browsing,

It's too early to speculate about the specifications, but considering it will compete with Apple's foldable smartphone, we expect the smartphone to feature a flagship processor. Considering the timeline, it could be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

ETNews also reports that this new model will not replace Samsung's existing portfolio of Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold smartphones. Additionally, the Wide Fold could feature the Qi 2.2 standard and 25W charging, which is expected to debut first at the launch of the Galaxy S26 series in January 2026

The brand's latest Z TriFold unravelled the possibilities with foldable, but the Z Wide Fold could be an intentional move to try to puncture Apple's first attempt at a foldable smartphone. We recently learned that the iPhone Fold may skip Face ID for Touch ID.

It will be interesting to see how both pair against each other. More information about the Wide Fold should be unveiled eventually, so stay tuned.
