Xiaomi is taking the rear display on its upcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro a step further with AI-generated mini apps. Following the previous Xiaomi 18 Pro teaser, the brand is marketing the display as a Versatile Back Screen via an official trailer.

Posted on Xiaomi's official Weibo account, the trailer highlights a slew of useful mini apps that can be used on the rear screen. These are tailored to specific daily tasks and can be pinned to favourites for quick access. Some of the highlighted examples from the trailer include:

  • A dedicated Pomodoro focus timer
  • A daily water intake tracker
  • A simple egg-cooking timer
  • An English vocabulary memorisation tool
  • Dynamic recipe recommendation cards

Xiaomi is also partnering with the likes of Starbucks, Meituan and a host of other brands for apps like Caffeine intake tracker, a "What to order" randomiser and more.

The new teaser shows the display on the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max. The main difference is an extra sensor below the rectangular camera bump. The phone can also be seen carrying the LEICA branding.

While the trailer doesn't mention it, the Xiaomi 18 Pro could also retain the ability to play mini-games on the rear screen, just like its predecessor. Furthermore, Xiaomi should also renew the Retro Handheld Gamepad back case for the Xiaomi 18 Pro series.

According to Xiaomi, the decision to expand the ecosystem was driven by user engagement. The brand reports that Xiaomi 17 Pro owners interacted with rear app cards over 4 million times daily and generated 3.5 million wallpapers every single day.

Adding to this, Xiaomi Group President Lu Weibing said that because individual needs vary wildly, the company wanted to leverage AI to do more with the back display, rather than just treating it as a novelty extra screen.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro series is confirmed for a China launch later this month. The company is already hyping the release, promising major improvements to AI processing, performance, cameras, and battery endurance. More information about its concrete launch date and specifications should be revealed soon.
