Summary

  • In the AnTuTu benchmark, the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 scored 604,303 points while the Dimensity 6300 achieved 531,619 points.
  • On the Geekbench 6 CPU test, the Dimensity 6400 scores 9% more than the 6300, indicating better multi-tasking performance.
  • Overall, Dimensity 6400 performs about the same in GPU tasks, and the same goes for the CPU performance.

MediaTek's Dimensity 6000 series processors are often used in lower mid-range and budget smartphones. Unlike the Dimensity 7000 series, which offers great mid-range performance, the 6000 series is slightly laid back to achieve a more affordable price. The Dimensity 6300 and 6400 chipsets are the most prominent SKUs found in the market, offering slightly varied performance. We benchmarked the Dimensity 6400 in the Tecno Pova Slim and the Dimensity 6300 in the Samsung Galaxy F06 5G to see what the performance difference is, and this is what we found.

In the AnTuTu V11 benchmark, the Dimensity 6400 pulls slightly ahead with a total score of 604,303, beating the Dimensity 6300's score of 531,619 points by approximately 13%. However, the raw performance difference is smaller than what the total score suggests. The CPU scores are nearly identical (236,411 vs 234,118).

However, the lead for the Dimensity 6400 comes from the UX score difference (197,024 vs 142,889) and the Memory score. This is likely because the Tecno Pova Slim 5G has higher base RAM and storage (8 GB + 128 GB) than the Samsung Galaxy F06 5G (4 GB + 64 GB).

If we keep aside the massive difference caused by the lack of more memory in the Galaxy F06 5G, the raw difference between the two isn't much. Both boast older Cortex-A76 and A55 cores, but while the Dimensity 6400 clocks out at 2.5 GHz, the Dimensity 6300 clocks out at 100 MHz less, at 2.4 GHz. And that's exactly why there's only a slight difference in the CPU scores.

Further cementing the findings from the AnTuTu scores, Geekbench confirms the difference in performance isn't huge. With a single-core score of 764 and a multi-core score of 1,987, the Dimensity 6400 edges out the Dimensity 6300 by roughly 4% in single-core and 9% in multi-core (744 and 1,813). The latter is probably exacerbated due to low base RAM on the Galaxy F06 5G.

The rest of the performance difference, again, comes from Dimensity 6400's Cortex-A76 cores running at 2.5 GHz (vs 2.4 GHz). While not a game-changer, this extra headroom could help slightly with app opening speeds and multitasking. However, neither of them is going to be as fast as the Dimensity 7300 or Dimensity 7400.

In terms of sustained performance, the newer chip wins. The Dimensity 6400 maintained a higher average performance, scoring 165,837 GIPS compared to the Dimensity 6300's 149,988 GIPS score. More importantly, the Dimensity 6400 was more stable at 88% versus the Dimensity 6300, which attained 84% stability during the 15-minute test.

This suggests that the newer Dimensity 6400 has better thermal management and will perform slightly better during longer gaming sessions

The Dimensity 6300 failed to complete our 3DMark Wild Life Extreme stress test. However, it's clear from the AnTuTu scores that the gaming performance on both is virtually identical. Both chips use the same Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, and while the Dimensity 6400 boasts excellent stability, neither is designed for heavy gaming. Both can handle games at low settings, but will struggle in games like Genshin Impact.

Similarly, the Speedometer benchmark scores of both smartphones are nearly identical, too. The Dimensity 6400 scored 5.88, whereas the Dimensity 6300 scored 6.09, both well within the margin of error. This indicates that both chipsets are capable of basic browsing, but may struggle to load heavy websites.

Verdict

The Dimensity 6400 is an incremental upgrade over the Dimensity 6300. Both are literally the same processor, but with different clock speeds. The former pulls slightly ahead, though, exacerbated due to the phone bias and RAM/ROM quantities and "looks" like it's better, but in reality, the performance difference is minuscule.

If you're choosing between the two, pick the Dimensity 6400 for slightly faster app opening speeds. However, if you're someone who wants to do a lot of gaming, neither cuts. In that case, we'd recommend getting the Dimensity 8400 or the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4.
