The budget 5G chipset segment has few contenders, and one of them is the MediaTek Dimensity 6400. The chip aims to deliver a good enough performance to affordable phones, while also focusing on efficiency, and more importantly, 5G connectivity. We put the Dimensity 6400 through its paces, and the results were pretty much what we expected. Nothing extraordinary, but enough to justify its presence in budget smartphones.
MediaTek Dimensity 6400 AnTuTu Score
AnTuTu Benchmark | Score |
|---|---|
Dimensity 6400 AnTuTu Score | 544,835 |
CPU | 238,287 |
GPU | 0 (test failed) |
Memory | 125,393 |
UX | 181,155 |
In our test results, the GPU benchmark failed and returned a score of 0, likely because we tested it out on the Tecno Pova Slim. The smartphone is tightly packed, and the processor barely has any room to breathe. As a result, it would heat up during the GPU test and would eventually crash. This means the actual total score of the device could be significantly higher once the GPU performance is properly accounted for.
The Dimensity 6400 scores a respectable 544,843 points in AnTuTu. Despite the missing GPU data, the CPU score of 238,287 points is surprisingly decent for its segment, but it doesn't outperform the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4. And rightfully so, as Dimensity 6400 is a 6nm processor with 2x Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.5 GHz, and 6x Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz.
The older, less powerful ARM cores combined with a less efficient manufacturing process mean the Dimensity 6400 not only performs a bit slower but is also less efficient. Although the UX score of 181,155 is pretty decent, and suggests that general system navigation and app opening speeds will be fairly snappy.
Dimensity 6400 Geekbench Score
Geekbench 6 CPU | MediaTek Dimensity 6400 |
|---|---|
Single-core | 764 |
Multi-core | 1,978 |
In Geekbench, the Dimensity 6400 scored 764 points in single-core and 1,978 points in multi-core. While it won't break any speed records, the multi-core score of nearly 2,000 indicates it handles daily multitasking, social media apps and background processes just fine. However, the single-core score is toward the weaker side, so expect app opening times and single-threaded performance to be slower than average.
Dimensity 6400 CPU Throttling Test
CPU Throttling Test | MediaTek Dimensity 6400 |
|---|---|
Maximum Score | 178,704 GIPS |
Average Score | 165,837 GIPS |
Minimum Score | 151,898 GIPS |
Throttling Percentage (Higher is better) | 88% |
Stability is a strong suit of the Dimensity 6400. In a 15-minute stress test, the CPU throttled to 88% of its maximum performance. The graph shows a consistent performance output only with a minor step-down after the 8-minute mark.
This level of stability means users can expect consistent performance without the phone heating up or lagging significantly during long sessions. The scores aren't that great, though: the maximum and average are 178,704 and 165,837 GIPS, respectively. As you see in this Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 vs Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 comparison, both the Qualcomm chips score almost double that of Dimensity 6400. This tells us that the performance on this MediaTek SoC isn't extraordinary.
MediaTek Dimensity 6400 3DMark Score
3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test | MediaTek Dimensity 6400 |
|---|---|
Best Loop Score | 373 |
Lowest Loop Score | 371 |
Stability | 99.5% |
While the raw graphical power is extremely modest, which is why the processor could not handle the heavy graphics test on AnTuTu, the processor does finish 3DMark with a best loop score of 373 and an exceptional stability of 99.5%.
This indicates that while the Dimensity 6400 isn't built for high-end gaming, it is incredibly consistent. For casual games like Subway Surfers or even Free Fire at extremely low settings, it will deliver a perfectly flat 60 fps frame rate without any jitters or drops seen in less stable chips.
MediaTek Dimensity 6400 Speedometer Score
In the Speedometer 3.0 web browsing benchmark, the chipset scored 5.88 points. This is a basic score, suggesting the web browsing will be functional but may not be as lightning fast as premium mid-range devices. Heavy web apps might take an extra second to load, just like slower app opening speeds.

Verdict
The MediaTek Dimensity 6400 is a reliable processor for budget 5G smartphones. While its Geekbench and Speedometer scores are modest, and the AnTuTu scores aren't putting anyone to shame, it's a stable chipset in stress tests and has a surprisingly decent CPU.
All in all, the chipset will offer a smooth experience with decent battery life for an average user. It's a chipset that will be found in the sub-Rs 15,000 segment. However, if your budget can be extended, we would suggest looking at Snapdragon 6 Gen 4, Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 or even Dimensity 6400's more mature sibling, the Dimensity 7400.
