Google has officially begun rolling out the highly debated Advanced Flow security measure for Android users, which brings a mandatory 24-hour waiting period before allowing third-party app installations. While Google pitches it as an essential security feature, users have expressed their disappointment with it.
Google's Anti-Scam Feature Raises Friction
Screenshots shared on Reddit by user Super-Ad8814 give us a first look at the Advanced Flow process, which was announced in March 2026. When a user attempts to enable sideloading, the operating system now throws up a warning asking whether someone else directed them to toggle the setting.

It also warns that bad actors frequently use this tactic to compromise devices. Beyond that, it also displays a disclaimer clarifying that no legitimate business or government agency will ever ask you to sideload an application.
To proceed with the installation, users are forced to restart their smartphone. While they can postpone this reboot, the actual 24-hour countdown requires a restart to start. Throughout this waiting window, a dedicated settings page displays the time remaining. The smartphone itself will be functional throughout this period, though.

Once the 24 hours are done, users can finally sideload indefinitely or temporarily for seven days. That said, there are no restrictions for developers or enthusiasts who want to sideload via ADB (Android Debug Bridge) commands.
The new app installation flow has seen a lot of community backlash both when it was announced and now. The Android Community is voicing strong concerns over the new rules, with some even stating that this could be the beginning of a slippery slope.
Users also worry that Google may eventually lock users out entirely from standard APK installations. Conversely, it was interesting to see a handful of users speaking in favour of Google.
Well, it's no stranger that Android's open nature has seen a few changes in the last few years, with Google tightening a few screws here and there. The brand has also made it increasingly hard for custom ROM developers to develop third-party operating systems.
