Apple is reportedly working on AirPods with built-in cameras and new information suggests they will be incapable of recording videos. Expected to launch in 2027, the camera-equipped AirPods will arrive with another home product with a built-in camera.
According to details shared by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the upcoming camera-equipped AirPods and an unannounced home security product will not capture or save viewable video files. Instead, these built-in cameras will act strictly as visual data sensors.
While we don't have enough information about what they'll do, industry insiders have pointed toward their sole purpose being feeding real-time information directly into Apple's artificial intelligence system.
This setup may allow the AI to analyse the user's surroundings and interpret environmental context without recording watchable footage, thereby respecting user privacy. By restricting these lenses to AI processing only, Apple could deliver context-aware features such as spatial guidance for specially abled folks or intelligent home automation triggers.
In fact, a video that recently appeared on macOS showcasing the camera-equipped AirPods makes things a bit clearer. In it, a person can be seen holding a book. Perhaps the cameras will allow users to ask contextual questions about their surroundings and get quick answers with the help of the new Siri AI.
Alas, the upcoming AirPods won't be the only camera-equipped Apple gadget that will not record. Rumours about Apple's upcoming AI smart glasses also suggest the brand might not let users record, but instead use the cameras to feed into AI for context-aware answers.
