Apple's first foldable iPhone is on its way and it appears that the brand strongly considered pairing it with a dedicated Apple Pencil-like stylus.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple prototyped the stylus for the iPhone Ultra but later scrapped it. Gurman detailed that this experimental Apple Pencil was noticeably shorter and stubbier than the standard Apple Pencil that the brand currently sells for its iPads.

The stylus was reportedly designed to snap onto the edge of the phone, securing and wirelessly charging it while it's snapped on. However, despite advancing further through internal testing phases, Gurman reports that Apple no longer intends to launch it. While the original reasoning behind this is unknown, merely hearing about a stylus for an Apple smartphone is interesting, considering Apple's history.

It directly contrasts with former CEO Steve Jobs' famous mockery of the tool – "Who wants a stylus? You have to get 'em, put 'em away, you lose 'em. Yuck!" during the 2007 iPhone launch. However, it appears that the large 8-inch inner screen did prompt Apple engineers to explore the possibilities.

Apple's first foldable is expected to be dubbed the iPhone Ultra. While we still don't know what the brand will officially call it, reports suggest Apple engineers refer to it as the iPhone Ultra internally. The phone is expected to boast a passport-like form factor, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

The iPhone Ultra is expected to arrive with a 5.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch inner screen with a nearly creaseless display thanks to an advanced hinge. The phone could be powered by the Apple A20 Pro chipset, boasting a dual-rear camera setup and arriving in two colours – White and Black.

With the Apple Surprise and Shine launch event scheduled for September 9, 2026, expect the Cupertino giant to reveal more about the iPhone Ultra, iPhone 18 Pro series, Apple Watch Series 12 and the AirPods 5. Stay tuned for all the updates.
