Apple's ambitious 20th-anniversary iPhone redesign is reportedly still on track, despite a recent report claiming that the Cupertino giant had scrapped its plans for an all-glass design.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, people familiar with Apple's plans have confirmed that the redesign is still in development. This directly contradicts a recent claim from Jefferies analyst Edison Lee (via Barron's), who said Apple had cancelled the new design.
Gurman's sources say Apple is developing two iPhone Pro models, internally codenamed V73 and V74, with a design that uses significantly more glass across the front and back. The glass is also expected to wrap around the sides, while a metal band will still run through the middle of the phone.
However, there is some truth behind the earlier report. Apple did reportedly explore an even more radical design that would have replaced most of the phone's metal structure with glass.
That version was eventually scrapped during development after the company ran into manufacturing challenges, particularly when trying to connect the glass panels reliably at scale.
So, while Apple has abandoned one version of the 20th-anniversary iPhone design, the broader glass-centric redesign is reportedly still moving forward.
The 20th-anniversary iPhone cancellation report also had an immediate impact on Apple's stock, which fell as much as 2.8% during trading on Monday, August 10, 2026.
From the looks of it, the 2027 iPhone Pro models are therefore expected to remain on track for the company's 20th-anniversary iPhone push.
The iPhone remains Apple's biggest revenue driver, accounting for roughly half of the company's total revenue. We also got to know at the Apple Q3 2026 Earnings Call that iPhones grew 22% last quarter, making the success of future iPhone generations particularly important for the tech giant.
Before the 2027 redesign arrives, however, Apple has its iPhone 18 lineup to launch. The series is expected to introduce the company's first foldable iPhone Ultra alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. So, all eyes are on it at the moment.
