Apple has introduced a new way to verify whether a photo has been edited using AI. Alongside the variable-aperture main camera on the iPhone 18 Pro series, the company has added Reference Image. This is an opt-in feature that creates a verifiable record of what the camera sensor captured when a photo was taken.
When Reference Mode is enabled, the new sensor cryptographically signs the captured data, which Private Cloud Compute turns into an unalterable reference image. The Photos app can then display it alongside the final photo, allowing users to compare the two and spot edits.

Apple says the feature is built for photojournalists, photographers and everyday viewers who find it hard to distinguish between real and AI-generated and AI-edited images. Apple has also confirmed that APIs in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 will let third-party apps display reference images.
Moreover, Apple's Reference Image can only show what the main camera sensor captured when the shutter was pressed. It cannot establish that the scene itself was not staged or that a photo has not been presented without context.
Aside from that, Apple is also adding support for Google's SynthID standard in a software update later this year. For those unaware, SynthID watermarks AI-generated content and Apple's support will apply to most edited images, depending on what changes were made. Combined with image metadata, it gives users a second way to identify AI images.
Apple Reference Image Availability
Apple has confirmed that Reference Image will not be available in China at launch. Capture will also be unavailable on the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max in the European Union initially, though EU iPhones running the iOS 27 release will still be able to develop and view reference images.
That said, the Reference Image feature is limited to the new Pro iPhones, since it depends on the new main camera sensor. It cannot be brought to older iPhones through a software update. Apple has not flagged any restrictions for India, so the feature should work here.
