Apple has finally responded to reports of the iPhone Duo's inner display cracking shortly after launch. Several buyers reported cracks around the hinge, with some claiming the damage appeared during normal use without accidental drops. Well, Apple has now acknowledged the issue.

Apple Acknowledges iPhone Duo Screen Issues

In a statement shared with 9to5Mac and Bloomberg, Apple said, "We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement."

Apple has not disclosed how many iPhone Duo models are affected or confirmed what is causing the cracks. However, reports (via 9to5Mac) suggest that some owners have already received replacement devices, while others face limited availability.

What Is Causing the iPhone Duo Screen to Crack?

Several users have reported cracks along the hinge, and some have also noticed unusual sounds when unfolding the phone. The damage reportedly includes bright lines, white patches and unresponsive areas on the inner display.

An iFixit teardown of the iPhone Duo offers two possible explanations. One is that the central support bar that fails to retract properly could put pressure on the display.

Alternatively, the hinge's curved metal rails could press against the screen if they move out of position.

Neither explanation has been confirmed by Apple and the exact cause remains unknown at the time of writing.

What Should iPhone Duo Owners with a Cracked Screen Do?

For now, as Apple advises, affected owners should contact AppleCare for assistance with replacements. So, even those who didn't opt for AppleCare+ when buying the iPhone Duo could get a free device replacement.

However, accidental damage may be assessed differently by the brand. We are not sure how Apple will deal with those, but that will most likely require AppleCare+, or you will need to pay the hefty display replacement cost.

The iPhone Duo repair costs are steep, too. In India, replacing the inner display costs Rs 1,49,900 without AppleCare+, while other damage can cost up to Rs 2,24,900.

While Apple maintains that only a small number of devices are affected, reports raise concerns about the durability of its first foldable phone.

Well, it's not unusual for first-generation phones to malfunction and face heavy criticism. Take Samsung's first Galaxy Z Fold phones, for example. From screen peeling issues to defective hinge mechanisms, it did face a lot of criticism to get to a comfortable point like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Now, only time will tell how Apple plans to address these issues and make a better foldable with the iPhone Duo 2. Reports already suggest that the iPhone Duo 2 could arrive with Face ID, replacing the Touch ID on the original model.
