Light, a popular name in the distraction-free devices space, has announced the Light Flip. It's the brand's fourth phone and its very first flip phone, which pairs the nostalgic appearance of a physical T9 keypad with Light's restricted software DNA to combat smartphone addiction.

Light Flip Specifications and Features

The Light Flip features a 2.8-inch OLED display with a 480x640 pixels of resolution. Powering the phone is a MediaTek MT8873 processor, with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The phone's outer shell is made of plastic and features an IP54 rating for protection against dust and water splashes.

Fueling the internals is a generous 1,800mAh battery. Practicality is a major focus here as the back panel can be easily removed to replace the battery. Network and connectivity-wise, there's 5G, LTE, eSIM support, a USB-C port and, surprisingly, a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio output.

Optics-wise, there's a 50 MP main camera. Besides, there are dual microphones with noise cancellation, stereo speakers and a keychain loop.

The core experience relies on the brand's custom LightOS platform. Instead of a traditional app store filled with apps, LightOS focuses on essentials. For starters, users will have access to fundamental tools like navigation, audio playback, voice-to-text and audio messaging.

Light is asking $299 (approximately Rs 28,000) for the Flip, and it starts shipping in April 2027. The phone can also be purchased with a $39 (approximately Rs 3,400) subscription via Light Service. It will be available in six colourways – Red, Navy, Yellow, Pink, Black and Light Grey.

The Light Flip is exactly what the minimalist in me has been looking for. In today's niche flip phone market, modern flips are essentially full smartphones camouflaged in a flip form factor. That is not what users meant when they said they wanted a flip phone.

Light's attempt changes that narrative, making the Light Flip exactly what a niche user has been asking for. That is, a phone that is dumb enough to curb addiction, but smart enough not to make us miss the practical utilities of the smartphone experience. Not to mention, the removable battery is just a cherry on top.

With a growing desire to return to minimalism and a screen-free future, Light has something great on offer here. For those who wished the Light Phone 3 were an affordable flip phone, this is it, and I will be trying to get my hands on one for sure.
