CMF by Nothing's latest audio product, the Clip Pro earbuds, seems to be going viral for all the wrong reasons. Instead of talking about the earbuds themselves, the community has been busy criticising Nothing for using AI-generated marketing images. Ironically, the controversy has probably done more to promote the Clip Pro than the company's actual marketing campaign.

Nothing's Creative Identity Comes into Question

It all started when CMF's official X account shared an AI-generated person wearing the brand's latest Clip Pro earbuds. The tech community on X immediately smelled the AI-generated pixels, resulting in the post being "Community Noted". Nothing was quick to delete the post after considerable backlash.

However, the brand did not stop there, as it doubled down on the AI-generated marketing material by posting multiple AI photos, but now with a disclaimer – "any resemblance to real persons is purely coincidental".

Besides, the brand also posted a pretty chopped-up lifestyle video of the Clip Pros with more cuts than a mid-2000s Michael Bay action movie. While it might look convincing at first, it's painfully obvious that it was made using AI. From the mountains to the subway scene, it's pretty much a pain for eyes that dislike AI.

Realistically, this AI-heavy approach shouldn't be a total shock, as an earlier Smartprix report indicated that Nothing is betting big on the AI-first future.

A U-Turn from Nothing's Playbook

Nothing has historically banked really hard on genuine creative marketing, with arguably some of the best marketing campaigns involving creative professionals and actual artists working with the brand.

For example, Swedish design brand Teenage Engineering's CEO Jesper Kouthoofd is the Creative Lead at Nothing. Then, earlier this year, Nothing declared pop icon Charlie xcx as its first-ever Global Brand Ambassador.

Therefore, marketing via AI slop feels like a complete U-turn for the brand and the people who liked Nothing's creative approach in the first place. As the public’s patience for uncanny marketing wears thin, the company is going to have to find a better balance.

While the AI-generated campaign has divided opinion, it has also succeeded in bringing significant attention to the Clip Pro. Now it's up to Nothing to build on that momentum. If the company can combine its trademark creativity with AI more thoughtfully, it could end up with the best of both worlds.
