Summary

  • OpenAI will offer one year of free access to its ChatGPT Go plan for all users in India starting November 4, 2025.
  • On said date, OpenAI will be holding its DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, India.
  • The plan normally costs Rs 399 per month and brings faster responses, higher message limits and image uploads.

OpenAI's ChatGPT Go plan, which launched in India earlier this year, sits comfortably between the free and Plus tiers. Priced affordably and offering faster responses, higher message limits and image uploads, the plan was an instant hit among the Indian audience. Now, in an attempt to double down on its India push, OpenAI is all set to make the plan free. But, there's a catch.

You can get ChatGPT Go free for a year next week

OpenAI has announced that all users in the country will get a year of free access to its mid-tier ChatGPT Go plan, starting November 4, 2025, PTI (Press Trust of India) reports. The announcement comes just ahead of the company's Bengaluru DevDay Exchange event, scheduled on the same day.

Turns out, those who sign up during a promotion time period will be able to grab ChatGPT Go for free for a year. Usually, the plan costs Rs 399 in India, which directly translates to Rs 4,788 in savings with the promo offer. In a statement, Nick Turley, Head of ChatGPT, stated,

Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI.

Besides, the company has also stated that the promotion is a continuation of OpenAI's India-first commitment and supports the IndiaAI mission to make AI more accessible in India. It only makes sense, since India is now OpenAI's second-largest and fastest-growing market.

For those unaware, ChatGPT Go offers extended access to ChatGPT 5, image generation, file uploads, advanced data analysis and longer memory for more personalised responses.

From the looks of it, the 'free' push is OpenAI's attempt to take the fight straight to its competitors like Google's Gemini and Perplexity AI, who already have offered similar free plans in the country. For example, not too long ago, Google offered a year of free Gemini for students and on the other hand, Airtel users got Perplexity for free with bundled plans.

So, be on the lookout and grab your free ChatGPT Go tier next week, as and when the limited time offer is live. At the time of writing, OpenAI has not confirmed what pricing or renewal options will follow after the 12-month period ends or how existing users will be able to make use of the offer.
