Summary

  • Google has added file editing to the Gemini app. Files like PDFs that Gemini creates can now be reviewed and modified within the same chat.
  • PDFs can be edited in the Gemini mobile app as well as on the web. However, other formats such as Docs and Sheets work only on the web.
  • The feature is available to all Gemini users in every supported language and it doesn't require any subscription.

Google just rolled out a file editor in the Gemini app on Android and iOS. It allows users to open, review and change the PDFs, documents, spreadsheets and slide decks that Gemini creates. It means you no longer have to export a file to Google Docs or another app just to fix a line or improve a section.

Once Gemini creates a file, you can open it in full screen and make changes by typing into it. You can also highlight a portion of text and ask Gemini about it. Next, you can ask Google's AI chatbot to refine the entire file. In Google's demo, Gemini converts handwritten lecture notes into a study guide in PDF format. After that, the user refines the PDF by highlighting sections.

Gemini Builds on Its File Generation Feature

Note that PDF is the only file format that you can open and edit in the Gemini mobile app and on the web. Other formats such as code, Docs, Sheets, slide decks, TXT and Markdown files need the Gemini web app.

For presentations, Gemini can write the slides, display how they look in the chat and change their tone or structure when requested. The deck can be opened in Google Slides or you can save it to your device in PPTX or PDF format.

Gemini can also build trackers and tables that open directly in Google Sheets. For documents, Gemini supports PDF, Google Docs, TXT, Markdown and LaTeX formats and all of them can be saved to Google Drive.

As for availability, the feature is rolling out to all Gemini users in supported languages. It covers personal Google accounts along with Workspace customers as well. So, unlike Google's Gemini Spark AI agent in India, which is limited to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, this one is freely available.

The update builds on the file generation feature Google introduced six months ago. That feature allowed Gemini to create DOCX, XLSX, PDF, CSV, RTF, TXT, LaTeX and Markdown files. Gemini can also create Google's own Docs, Sheets and Slides formats. However, you could only download those files or export them to Drive. And for making any changes, you had to open a separate app.

The Gemini app is getting a lot of updates this year. Google earlier pushed a colourful Gemini UI revamp to Android phones. In addition, Google is also testing a new Gemini Live UI for Android.
